Happy NEW YEAR!

I have kept a journal off and on since I was 8 years old. Last year, around this same time, I found the box that holds all these old, old journals. So I sat down and thought it would be funny to read to my kids some of my thoughts, dreams, aspirations from my past.

Well - I noticed an interesting trend.

MOST my journals began in January and my first entries were my New Years Resolutions.
I was mortified, when I read my 8 year old journal and realized I have had the SAME goals since!
Stop biting my nails
Exercise more
Keep my room clean
Pray more
Read my scriptures every day

I was horrified when I grab the next journal, and the next, and the next and the NEXT and they ALL said the SAME thing!

So last year- Last year I declared it my year of NO GOALS! I was so depressed- which isn't like me... normally I LOVE new starts, new beginnings, setting goals, making plans, etc... so I was really in a slump.
But I am proud to report- my year of NO Goals turned into the year I ticked off one goal: stop biting my nails. ( Yes- I have nails now! Sometimes they are "long and lovely" most times they are "trim and tidy".)
AND made HUGE headway in two other goals: Praying more and Reading my Scriptures Daily. (I've missed maybe 6 or 7 days total since Feb.08).

So- nope.. I'm not setting any new goals this year either. Because when I make a plan- I find ways to cheat and cut corners etc... so I just focus on my list... and focus on TODAY (I've painted this word on our bedroom wall.) And just do what I can TODAY to move forward in these areas.

I hope you all have/had a wonderful New Years-

Goals are dumb. Unless they aren't dumb, then they are cool.

Anyway, Happy New Year!

Plans do the same thing to me. I'm definitely a sone-day-at-a-time kind of girl.

Happy New Year!

Here's the quote I have been thinking about today:

You can't do everything all at once, but you can do something, at once. Calvin Coolidge

That has to be one of the most interesting bedroom decorations I've ever seen. Probably the most functional I've ever seen, too :) Great idea...one day at a time.

Hey Laura,
Just want to stop by and say thanks again for the help yesterday. You have totally saved my butt, I can actually relax and enjoy my the very new day of the new year. The kids had fun and so did I. How was your New Year's eve?
Oh by the way, you don't need to exercise....you are already doing it chasing after Heath all over the place.

I love it. How funny. I love that you reached your goals once you stopped making them.

How crazy is that!

And I was just kidding about calling so late last night. I was totally awake!

Hi Swirl, I wanted to check out your blog, and I LOVE it! I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE that you have "TODAY" on your bedroom wall! What a great reminder to stay focused.....that is your goal! See, you have one! You just didn't realize it!

PS-Kute Kasey and family used to be a neighbor of mine! Isn't she just KUTE?

I like to make my goals on Dec 31 and tally up what I did the year before! Much easier.

Like the story about the guy who got a bullseye every time! First he shot, then he drew the bullseye around the hole

That TODAY would mean something much different to my husband! Or is it TODAY? (need to add a question mark)

Sometimes doing things different gets us out of the rut we are in! Seems to have worked for you in 2008. Love the TODAY on your wall--it is even in my favorite color of blue.
